Alfonso Jaramillo's group members (Feb 2009)
Prof. Alfonso Jaramillo, PI
Alfonso.Jaramillo AT synth-bio.org,
Alfonso.Jaramillo AT polytechnique.edu
Prof. Alfonso Jaramillo received a Ph.D. in Theoretical Physics from
the University of Valencia (1999). He conducted postdoctoral research
in computational biology at the Universite Libre de Bruxelles (1999-
2002,), Universite Louis Pasteur in Strasbourg (2002) and Harvard
University (2003). In September 2003 he joined the biochemistry
faculty of the Ecole Polytechnique as Maitre de Conferences
(tenured since September 2005).
He co-developed the DESIGNER software for computational protein
design, as well as other computational biology tools for use in
structural and systems biology. His teaching responsibilities at the
Ecole Polytechnique include the bioinformatics Master (together with
Prof. Simonson). His group consists on two PhD students and two
postdoctoral fellows. He is coordinator of the EU FP6-NEST synthetic
biology consortium on biohydrogen production from solar energy using
a synthetic biology approach, and participant in the FP6-NEST
synthetic biology project EMERGENCE. He has also been awarded the
MIT-France Seed fund 2006-2007, with Prof. Prather (MIT, USA), for
the design of a glucaric acid production pathway in E. Coli. He is
also funded by an Alliance 2006-2007 project, with Prof. Banta
(Columbia U., USA), to design new enzymes for biofuel cells. He has
published 34 refereed articles and conference proceedings.
He participates into two grants form Spain Ministry (MEC), "Componentes de nueva
generacion para la explotacion eficiente de infraestructuras grid en
eciencia (ngGrid)". Reference: TIN2006-12890. Coordinator: Vicente
Hernandez-Garcia (UPV, Valencia), and, "Ingenieria de Proteinas". Reference: BIO2006-07332.
Coordinator: Jose M. Sanchez-Ruiz (U. Granada).
He is member of the editorial board of the IET Synthetic Biology journal.
He has lead the iGEM2006 team of Valencia (Spain), who obtained an
award. His research interests involve several aspects of synthetic
biology, including protein and enzyme design, metabolic engineering
and systems biology (by incorporating various high-throughput -omic
data into a modelisation framework).
Dr. Maria Suarez, postdoc
Maria.Suarez AT synth-bio.org
She received her B.Sc. (1999) and her M. Sc (2001) in Theoretical Physics
from the University of Oviedo, Spain. Her Ph.D. thesis was obtained, in the
same university in 2006, and dealt with thermodynamics in String Theory.

Javier.Carrera AT synth-bio.org
Mr. Javier Carrera has received his B.Sc. in Industrial Engineering from the
Universidad Politecnica de Valencia (UPV) in 2007, following the last year
at Royal Technology Institute (KTH, Sweden) where he did his master thesis.
He is currently following his PhD with with Prof. Alfonso Jaramillo and Prof. Santiago Elena (IBMCP, Valencia).

Mariel Montesinos, Administrative Assistant
Mariel.Montesinos AT synth-bio.org
Ms. Mariel Montesinos is specialized in international trade and organization
of work. She has worked in different companies in
Spain and Belgium in the field of logistics and international trade. She has
worked at the logistics office of the Direction of Studies at the Ecole
Polytechnique since September 2005 until January 2007. Currently she is working as assistant to
Prof. Jaramillo at the Ecole Polytechnique, where she is in charge of the
administrative tasks related to research proposal preparation, submission
and project management. She is also responsible for the organization of
meetings, coordination of travel, monitoring of resource usage and costs and
general administrative task related to the group development. Her linguistic
skills (fluent English, French and maternal Spanish and Catalan) allows her
